Located in the High Bank of Mendoza River in Cruz de Piedra, Maipu Department at 850 mt above the sea level. (2780 ft)
This micro region is characterized by its optimum daily range of temperature. At the end of the summer and beginning of autumn, days are warm which enables a correct ripening of the cabernet sauvignon but nights are quite cold. The cold air of the mountain goes down by the river blank and spreads on the zone close to the river and this grants one of the best daily range temperatures of Argentina. This produces grapes with a great concentration, ripe tannins and a correct acidity, giving as a result elegant and balanced wines with sweet tannins and full body.
Finca Libertad has 40 ha/100 acres. These are part of the 250 ha/625 acres corresponding to the High Bank of the Mendoza River that start in Blanco Encalada, to the West and end in Cruz de Piedra to the East. Mendoza has a total of 240.000 ha planted with vines, this means that 1 of 1000 are planted in the High Bank of Mendoza River.
Besides the benefit of the climate, the soils have huge quantities of pebbles, gravel and clay which stresses the vines in a way that the roots go up to 5 meters depth looking for water and nutrients.
In this vineyard we have mainly vines of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Malbec but there are also vines of Sangiovese, Syrah, Merlot and Petit Verdot.
Some parcels were planted at the end of 19th century or beginning of the 20th. Part of the Cabernet Franc was planted in 1888 and is one of the oldest of the world. The Cabernet Sauvignon was planted in 1927, Sangiovese in 1930, Syrah 1951, Malbec 1960 and Merlot 1962. In 1999 and 2002 some parcels were replanted and the Petit Verdot was added.
All the vines are planted on their own root with a density of 5500 plants per hectare. The old vines are pre-philoxera as they were brought from Europe before the disease. The irrigation is made by furrows and flooded which allows the water to penetrate very deep in the soil. The training system is vertical with the exception of the syrah that is a parral. All the low vines are protected with mesh against hail.
All the above mentioned makes of Finca Libertad a unique terroir in the world.
